Step 1.1 - Choosing a class

Alright - ready to get started?  Might as well get started on the right foot.  Of course you're allowed to do what you want, but if you want to be a newb scrub that's up to you as well.

Before choosing a class let's clear something up: either faction is really the same thing.  A lightning sorcerer is a telekinetic sage but swap the awesome visuals of Force lightning for .. pebbles.  So the things you need to know:

  • Each class faction has its mirror class, only visuals & some gear will change on some classes namely Smugglers/Operatives and Commandos/Operatives (mainhand and offhand pieces).  The Imperial visuals are nicer but I find that players pubside are nicer so your call.
And we summarized that with one bullet point - not bad eh?

So choosing a class when you're new and don't want to die all the time and enjoy a constantly fat repair bill is easy: choose a class with self-heals.  I recommend starting with one of those and frankly go DPS it's more fun and you go through fights quicker.

Therefore - go with a Commando/Mercenary, Smuggler/Operative or Sage/Sorcerer.  Of course this does not account for personal preferences for the storyline (gotta do them all silly!).  If you want to not have ye olde heals go with a Guardian/Juggernaught DPS or Vanguard/Powertech DPS as they're fairly sturdy.

For advanced classes on dps, you have "burst" spec and "dot" spec sub-classes.  For beginners go for a burst spec, it's easier, you learn the game and then you experiment.  I like bust specs in general, but someone who can play dot is usually deadly, especially in PvP, it's about what you like and having fun.  As an example, a Commando burst is Gunnery.  Dulfy has guides on most of them here, good reading even if some are outdated.

What you want to avoid when you start is the Sentinel (aka Sentard) asd Marauder (aka evil Sentard) as they're glass cannons when you start - they're the hardest classes to play.  So many bads play these it's not even funny, I know the two lightsabers and the "double saber throw" are visually the coolest but when experienced players see those in flashpoints & such, they can shudder in their chairs eating them snacks.

I tend to vote off the island these bads and replace them with one of my companions if they don't listen (and most don't really).  This is a group-based game, be nice to other players don't hand them a repair bill because you're in need of a double-saber throw or you'll die like a 13-year old girl in 1964 at a Beatles concert.

Fair warning: if you name your toon(s) after existing Star Wars characters (say Därthvàdér as the other ways are taken), others will automatically assume the worst.  So don't.  When I see one of those I do assume you're a new player with no sense of what to do and statistically I'm right, numbers (unlike politicians and/or Hutts they feels the same) do no lie.

Also, keep on reading, many clues await in this site for your enjoyment.
